Anti-wrinkle moisturizers-how many are there? 1000? 5000?
I am just knocked over by the sheer number of anti-wrinkle moisturizers “out there.” Are they all anti-wrinkle moisturizers or are 10%, 20% or how about 1% You just plain don’t know unless you start scrutinizing ingredients! Let’s talk about what happens with age to our skin and then talk about how to look younger with GOOD anti-wrinkle moisturizers that do the job they promise to do!
Collagen and Elastin Production Slows
As we age, collagen (a structural protein in the skin) and elastin (another structural protein) production within the skin slows down. It’s the loss of elastin that causes the skin to lose its elasticity. It does not snap back as readily as it used to. Loss of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid causes the skin to be much thinner and susceptible to damage. Loss of collagen is what causes wrinkles through lack of production and cross linking. We talked about the first level of defense-serums so if you haven’t read that great article here is the article about the best organic skincare serum on the market.
If you haven’t somehow gotten the message that your diet is likely inflammatory and that in turn causes inflammation of the skin=skin aging then here’s some info.
Production of New Skin Cells Decreases
Skin cells do not regenerate as quickly as we age. Therefore, dead skin cells do not shed as quickly leading to rough dull looking skin. (This is why exfoliation on a regular basis is a must do or your skin will look dull and hence-older!) My very favorite exfoliation to do at home is a vitamin C mask. You feel as if you have had and look as if you have had a microdermabrasion. Since SO many people have “spots” I thought I’d give you an effective home MDB for “spots” which is best accompanied by a serum specifically for “spots.”
Whitening Lightening Skin Scrub:
• 1 tablespoon yogurt
• 1 teaspoon crushed peeled cucumber
• squeeze lemon juice
• 1 tsp molasses (optional)
• 1 tablespoon brown sugar
Mix well and rub onto skin. Leave on for a few minutes then wash off. Use a couple of times a week to lighten skin. If you like this, let me know!
Loss of Fat
WE lose facial body fat underneath the skin. This causes the loss of skin firmness and the look of hollowed cheeks and eye sockets. The skin looks less plump and less smooth. The slowing down in activity of oil and sweat producing glands also causes the skin to dry and lead to a host of dry skin care problems such as flaky and itchy skin. And there’s more but let’s not get depressing here! By the way if you are like most people you gain weight as you get older which mitigates this “look.” However it is a better game plan to just normalize your weight, which includes having good GI tract function, and use non-surgical methods to fill in what needs filling in.
When its wrinkles under the eyes, which are fine lines, use first a vitamin C and short chain hyaluronic acid serum. Add under-eye care as needed.. Many skin care manufacturers know that the group of women reaching for this “initial stuff” are late 20’s millennials who do NOT want to age. So they make a TON of lotions and potions which may or may not-usually not-be needed.
My recommendation would be to find as many of the good ingredients listed in terms of antioxidants, and a short chain hyaluronic acid in a natural moisturizer base such as rosehip oil and jojoba to be my pick of the best thing for actual under-eye wrinkles. Other great anti-oxidants and ingredients to look forinclude the antioxidants most shown to repair damage and slow the aging process.
Vitamin A, Vitamin C , CoEnzyme Q-10 (CoQ-10) Vitamin E ,Bioflavonoids and Polyphenols. A lot of attention has been given to Vitamin C serum lately and the science bears out that it does help! Most women benefit from a good Vitamin C-hyaluronic acid serum as one of “their serums.”
Feurulic acid and Copper peptides containing serum (copper being better) have protective properties. Copper peptides help restore the moisture barrier on “overworked skin.”
And here are more great ingredients which tend to be natural and plant based:
• Acai oil • Alpha-lipoic acid• Green tea extract• Retinol• Caffeine • Salicylic acid • Retinoic acid • Hyaluronic acid
• DMAE (not synthetic)
• Extracts of fruits and herbs
• Natural palmitoyl tri-peptide
This would be a “thicker serum.” And yes, an extra eye serum is useful for those with puffy eyes or sensitive under-eye skin.
When you see crows feet and “rhytids” (deeper wrinkles) you need to stimulate collagen more so you find a multi-layer regimen containing collagen stimulating ingredients such as retinol, hydroy acids and you get a little more aggressive in your home care routine. You might add a derma-rolling device to further stimulate collagen….or add light chemical peels to your regimen. Make sure you are hydrated and you get great sleep. If you don’t, you will look older so fix that issue for your looks and health.
Here is what to look for ingredient-wise to find the best anti-aging moisturizers:
- Ceramides – Helps replenish the skin’s natural oils.
- Hydroxy Acids – Helps with exfoliation of dead skin cells
- Glycerol – Helps water and other moisturizer ingredients penetrate the skin to get where they are needed.
- Niacinamide – Helps the skin produce more natural oils, and may also help reverse the signs of sun-damaged skin, like brown spots and blotchiness
Natural ingredients which make for great anti-aging moisturizer ingredients:
- Grape seed oil ,Squalene, Shark liver oil, Rosehip seed oil, Jojoba oil, Borage seed oil, Avocado oil and sea buckthorn oil
Our best seller is platinum supreme cream and it is also one of the most effective anti-wrinkle moisturizers.
When you see sagging you need to stimulate elastin with growth factor serums or creams.
What about an anti aging night cream ?
Again, manufacturers want us to NEED to have a day cream, a night cream, a day serum, a night serum, under eye cream, under eye serum, and the list goes on. It’s just not necessary in most cases. But if you NEED more moisture at night look at the ingredients above and use a nice thick cream to seal everything in at bedtime. A good anti-wrinkle moisturizer night cream should “seal everything in.” And after what I just said if you live in a harsh climate, have dry skin or go vacationing in cold climates (skiing, etc.) THEN pack the anti-wrinkle moisturizers galore including night cream!
